Chociaż po raz pierwszy określenie „imperium, nad którym nigdy nie zachodzi słońce” (the empire on which the sun never sets) zastosował Karol V Habsburg w odniesieniu do początków hiszpańskiej ekspansji kolonialnej, to odżyło ono w XIX wieku, gdy używano go głównie w kontekście brytyjskiego imperium – największego w nowożytnej historii świata. U szczytu swojej potęgi zajmowało ono około 36 milionów kilometrów kwadratowych, czyli mniej więcej jedną czwartą powierzchni naszej planety. Na jego obszarze, obejmującym ziemie leżące na wszystkich kontynentach, żył co piąty mieszkaniec naszego globu. […] Imperium odegrało zasadniczą rolę w ukształtowaniu współczesnego świata, formułując wstępne warunki do określenia zasad demokracji i współpracy międzynarodowej, a nawet zagadnień związanych z wielokulturowością.

Współorganizatorem konferencji był Zespół ds. Promocji Wydawnictwa UŁ, a jej program został przygotowany przez członków Komisji KRASP i dyrektorkę Wydawnictwa UŁ, Ewę Bluszcz. Tematem przewodnim konferencji było „Publikowanie naukowe. Wyzwania związane z rozwojem sztucznej inteligencji”.
