Integracja rynków finansowych Unii Europejskiej na poziomie politycznym i regulacyjnym przez lata nie nadążała za tempem internacjonalizacji działalności europejskich instytucji kredytowych. W konsekwencji, nadzór nad tymi podmiotami sprawowany z perspektywy indywidualnych, krajowych organów nadzorczych stawał się coraz mniej efektywny,
a równocześnie zaburzał mechanizmy konkurencji na rynku bankowym poprzez mnogość
i różnorodność wymogów ostrożnościowych narzucanych instytucjom kredytowym
w poszczególnych krajach. Załamanie gospodarcze wywołane wybuchem kryzysu finansowego z 2008 roku uwidoczniło wady ówczesnych struktur mających zapewniać stabilność systemu finansowego UE oraz dało impuls do utworzenia unii bankowej, integrującej nadzór nad największymi instytucjami kredytowymi w strukturach Europejskiego Banku Centralnego.
Na temat wpływu utworzenia unii bankowej krążyło wiele spekulacji, zaś w analizach zmiany te badano albo z perspektywy stabilności sektora bankowego, albo z perspektywy konkurencyjności tego sektora na arenie globalnej. Celem niniejszej monografii jest ocena wypadkowego wpływu integracji nadzoru ostrożnościowego w strukturach Jednolitego Mechanizmu Nadzorczego na największe instytucje kredytowe z perspektywy ich rentowności, płynności oraz ekspozycji na ryzyko. Dla przeprowadzenia takiej analizy skonstruowany został dedykowany miernik syntetyczny, który umożliwia kwantyfikację tego wypadkowego wpływu oraz weryfikację jak dobrze nadzorowane instytucje zdołały dostosować się do nowego środowiska regulacyjnego. Prezentowane narzędzie badawcze umożliwia śledzenie zmian w relatywnej kondycji konglomeratów finansowych i może posłużyć jako mechanizm wczesnego ostrzegania w kontekście potencjalnych zagrożeń dla stabilności finansowej Unii Europejskiej.
