Publikacja stanowi zwięzłe kompendium aktualnej wiedzy o procesach ewolucyjnych. Autor, zapraszając Czytelnika w fascynującą podróż po mapie procesów, które doprowadziły do ukształtowania się różnorodności życia, wychodzi z założenia, że jedynym prawdziwym mechanizmem napędowym ewolucji jest dobór naturalny, a inne czynniki, takie jak losowy dryf genetyczny czy migracje, mogą jego działanie jedynie maskować i ograniczać. Przedstawiając główne cechy ewolucji, takie jak np. jej historyczny i statystyczny charakter, czy też opisując przełomy ewolucyjne, wyjaśnia także nieporozumienia i mity z nią związane, jak choćby pojęcie dostosowania i przystosowania czy też ideę tzw. pramatki wszystkich ludzi.
Prof. dr hab. Jerzy Bańbura – kierownik Katedry Zoologii Doświadczalnej i Biologii Ewolucyjnej Wydziału Biologii i Ochrony Środowiska Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. Zajmuje się ekologią ewolucyjną. Zwierzęcymi modelami jego badań były ryby, owady i, przede wszystkim, ptaki. Odbył staże naukowe na uniwersytetach w Oksfordzie i Cambridge oraz w CEFE CNRS w Montpellier.
