Współcześnie nie docenia się wystarczająco dobrodziejstw rozwiązań pośrednich w społeczeństwach i gospodarkach. Gdy wymaga się od nas bycia najlepszymi i gdy każde miasto czy region mają ambicje być największymi, zwiększa się ryzyko przekroczenia i tak już mocno naruszonych granic wzrostu i frustracji, znajdujących ujście w napięciach politycznych. Odpowiedzią na to może być powrót do kultury „złotego środka” i rozwiązań pośrednich (między doskonałością a bylejakością, bogactwem a biedą, centralizacją a rozproszeniem, władzą a wolnością), jako antidotum na skrajności prowadzące do napięć i kryzysów. Laboratorium dla tych zmian mogą być samorządy lokalne, oparte na wspólnotach działających na rzecz dóbr wspólnych, dyskutujących o wspólnej przyszłości. Tytułowy „złoty środek” posiada głębokie uzasadnienie ontologiczne, etyczne, aksjologiczne i pragmatyczne, oraz znajduje zastosowanie w naukach społecznych, do których należy gospodarka przestrzenna. Autor monografii przekonuje, że przeciętni ludzie w swojej masie są kluczem dla współczesnego rozwoju, w tym dla dalszego rozwoju samorządności terytorialnej. Wymaga to jednak budowania w społeczeństwie i polityce kultury akceptacji różnorodności jako immanentnej cechy gatunku ludzkiego. Aby działania były skuteczne, muszą być akceptowane przez zwykłych ludzi. Aby były akceptowane, muszą wyjść od nich, a nie być narzucone. Aby od nich wyszły, muszą wynikać z poczucia sprawczości nawet na poziomie najmniejszych, oddolnych działań zbiorowych. Aby wzmacniać takie poczucie, należy systemy terytorialno-administracyjne decentralizować de facto a nie de iure, a terytorialną różnorodność rozwiązań instytucjonalnych, rozumianych jako wiele dróg do tego samego celu, uznać za naturalną.
