W ostatnim stuleciu gospodarka światowa rozwijała się najdynamiczniej w historii, jednak problemy zróżnicowania rozwoju oraz spory wokół roli rynku i państwa w inicjowaniu wzrostu i rozwoju gospodarczego nie tylko nie słabną, ale nawet narastają. Autor książki proponuje, by w tym nieustannym sporze między zwolennikami rozwiązań rynkowych i interwencjonistycznych zwrócić uwagę na stanowisko prezentowane w nowej ekonomii instytucjonalnej. Pozwala ono zrozumieć, dlaczego rozwoju gospodarczego nie zapewnią jedynie takie środki, jak odpowiednia polityka monetarna, „właściwy” poziom inflacji, dobrze skonstruowany budżet i polityka fiskalna czy działania sprzyjające akumulacji kapitału. Nowa ekonomia instytucjonalna wyjaśnia, z jakiego powodu próby przenoszenia do krajów biednych zasad leżących u podstaw ustroju i polityki gospodarczej państw tradycyjnie bogatych często nie przynoszą oczekiwanych rezultatów.
Autor ukazuje przydatność nurtu instytucjonalnego w ekonomii do badania rozwoju gospodarczego. Teorie przedstawicieli nowej ekonomii instytucjonalnej skonfrontował z doświadczeniami Chińskiej Republiki Ludowej, Wietnamu, Korei Południowej i Tajwanu, czyli krajów o różnej historii i sytuacji politycznej, postawionych w XX wieku przed nadzwyczajnymi wyzwaniami. Takie ujęcie zagadnienia dostarcza ciekawego materiału zwłaszcza z punktu widzenia sporów o cele, środki i tempo transformacji ustrojowej od gospodarki centralnie planowanej do rynkowej. Publikacja może stanowić bogate źródło wiedzy zarówno dla badaczy rozwoju gospodarczego, jak i dla studentów kierunków ekonomicznych.
