Wyzwania stojące przed projektowaniem i rozwojem produktów stają się coraz ciekawsze. Z jednej strony zadziwiające i stale rozwijające się technologie przemysłu 4.0. Systemy cyberfizyczne, wytwarzanie przyrostowe, internet rzeczy oraz internet wszystkiego, rozszerzona i wirtualna rzeczywistość, analityka dużych zbiorów danych, autonomiczne pojazdy i roboty, sztuczna inteligencja, a wszystko to połączone sieciami czujników nakazują łamać obowiązujące od lat paradygmaty przemysłowe. Z drugiej strony konieczność uwzględnienia kwestii zrównoważonego rozwoju oraz gospodarki o obiegu zamkniętym stanowiące poważne ograniczenie w wielu obszarach funkcjonowania przedsiębiorstw produkcyjnych i usługowych. Są to jednak ograniczenia, które muszą być wzięte pod uwagę przez przemysł, jeśli chcemy dalej bezpiecznie żyć na naszej planecie.
Prezentowana monografia stanowi systematyczny przegląd literatury dotyczący tematyki projektowania wyrobów wspomagającego doskonałość (DfX) w dobie zaprezentowanych wyzwań. W książce przeprowadzono ilościową i jakościową analizę publikacji dotyczących problematyki DfX. Wskazano aktualne trendy powiązane z obszarem projektowania i rozwoju produktu. Na tej bazie zaprezentowana została autorska koncepcja DfX 4.0, która zdaniem autora stanowić może doskonałą bazę do naukowej i praktycznej dyskusji nad tematyką projektowania przyszłości. Projektowania, które oprócz zdobyczy technologicznych będzie musiało uwzględniać także niemniej istotne kwestie zrównoważonego rozwoju oraz gospodarki o obiegu zamkniętym.
